Back to the Future’s Self-Drying Jacket Has Arrived

We all know it as the jacket Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future 2. However, this very jacket, once a prop in a high-budget film that has garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated cult following, is now a reality. Falyon Wearable Tech, the startup responsible for the jacket, is currently raising funds on Kickstarter with a campaign that will last until the end of the year. So far, the campaign has garnered $5K of its $12,000 goal in just five days.

The team behind Falyon Wearable Tech claims the smart jackets are 100% their original design, and have named the beloved piece of outerwear “SDJ-01,” which stands for “Self-Drying Jacket, take one.” In an interview with Refinery29, Falyon cofounder Aaron Coleman acknowledged the difficulty of developing the correct technology that would allow for the self-drying process to take place. In fact, where once the process of creating the futuristic jacket involved mounting fans to manage airflow, it instead quickly transformed into finding more ways to leverage air pressure.

Created with the highest quality materials, SDJ-01 is made of nylon with synthetic insulation, which gives the jacket its water resistance and quick drying capabilities. However, it’s the jacket’s ability to circulate high-pressure air internally that expedites the drying process from the inside out. Under average conditions, you can expect the jacket to dry in about 1-2 minutes after it has been exposed to rain or fallen victim to a spilled drink. Even more impressive is the fact that if you submerge yourself in a body of water with the jacket on, it will take the jacket only a little longer to dry.

The stylish, yet incredibly functional jacket, which the Falyon team expects to be sold exclusively online, comes with 8 pockets (with dedicated smartphone and tablet storage) and a charging cable. Furthermore, SDJ-01 is available in five colors and will retail for $199, with shipments beginning in April 2016.
